When I was younger, I absolutely hated 2 for departing so far from the original, but in the years since it has definitely become my preferred sequel (remake excluded). There is some fun to be had here, and I like Viggo's performance, but overall Leatherface is just a mess on film. The chase sequences are long and ineffective, and just feel like unnecessary filler. Bring back Chop Top!

When it comes to your collection, I expected one day in the future to see you on an episode of Hoarders buried up to your neck in VHS and DVDs.

@ Daniel - Check out 2 & 3 again. They're worth the rewatch. Don't bother with 4 unless you enjoy torture.

@ Pete - Appreciate you agreeing to my review. I don't understand why these films aren't better and more original. I guess you can only do so much with this type of film. As for Leatherface, he should have been written better. It was his film, yet he was hardly in it. What's the point? And I would have loved to have seen the unions you mentioned. Could have been interesting to see how things would have turned out.

I, like Morgan, haven't watched TCM3 in a few years, but I remember that I did enjoy it. Like you I love Ken Foree and it would have been cool to have the Foree/Savini vibe for this film had Savini not backed out. And wouldn't it have been interesting to have seen what the pairing of Jackson/Mortensen pre Lord of the Rings would have brought to the film.
This film is far, far superior to Next Generation, but I do agree on how dull Leatherface is in this one. Wonky is definitely a good word for this one, but like you said, had it not had so many rewrites, it would have been a better film. It's sad that the end product rarely looks anything like what was originally written or envisioned for a film to be. Whether it's through endless rewrites, change in directors (we saw that with the exorcist prequels, Exorcist The Beginnig and Dominion: The Exorcist Prequel) or having to recast a character late in the game.
Once again, a film that has people going on a road trip that goes to hell in a hand basket.

and if you have the chance, watch the 1970 cult film Girly on netflix, I did, it was a hoot, but don't expect gore or nudity, just another loony family killing people, and one hot chick running around in very short school girl outfit. watch the trailer

Excellent review yet again! I haven't watched TCM III for a couple of years now. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the first two TCM's. You almost made me spill my Coke when I read the Things I've Learned part. You keep proving me why this is one of the coolest blogs to follow.

I didn't hate the film. I just wish it had done more with its premise. But it ends up being pretty generic - which is normally fine by me. But the idea behind this film was so damn interesting and unique that it's kind of a disappointment when the writers can't really maintain the hype. And I don't think Tristan got his hole drilled because everyone was doing it. If that was the case, he would have done it the moment it was offered. He did it because he couldn't take the headaches anymore, falling into Karas' trap. I do get what you're trying to say, but I don't think the film really establishes that. Does he find his own sense of self? I don't know about that...

I am one of the few people who probably really liked the film. The film is about the main character Tristen, not the mad doctor. He is searching for acceptance and a sense of belonging. Everyone else is getting holes drilled into their skills, so it must be the right thing to do? Right? Then it's about his quest to break free and find his own sense of self.

Yep, definitely Type C. And no one has a clue what's going on until Tristan finds out. And by then, it's already too late since EVERYONE has already been experimented by this doctor. How does an entire town turn to this one guy is beyond me. And did they all have these horrible headaches? How is that possible? Great premise but it wasn't portrayed as well as it should have been. Definitely a rental.

This does sound like a good premise, unfortunate that it didn't do more with it. I've seen so many films fall prey to this same thing. I watch them sometimes almost trying to will it to get better or do more than it's doing, but in the end I often feel disappointed even if overall I enjoyed the film.
The fact that they went the tried and true "mad scientist wants to take over the world" seems so been there done that to me. Shoot, even Pinky and The Brain went there, lol.
So the entire town has had this procedure and no one until Tristan gets a clue? If that were the case, wouldn't he have at least heard of this "miracle cure" for headaches long before meeting Laney from other people? So with this chip in their head, he controls them with a remote? A perfect example of Type C Zombies, lol.
Brainjacked sounds like something I would watch if I caught it on cable or maybe a Red Box rent.

@TGWLH - I tend to get inside people's brains like that. I apologize. I'm not the biggest fan of these films, but I do kind of dig this movie for the most part. I wish they were more like the games themselves though. And yes, RE4 is friggin' awesome. I love that game! As for the Lickers, they're getting the shaft. Too bad.

@Jervaise - 4 out of 4? I don't know what film you were watching but no way is this a perfect film. Average at best.

@Carl - I forgot to mention that annoying slow-mo for the zombie shots! What the hell was that about? So stupid. And obviously the MK line was a homage to Anderson's MORTAL KOMBAT film. The only thing that piece of dialogue did was make me want to watch MORTAL KOMBAT, which is a better film than any of these RESIDENT EVIL films.

Agreed on all accounts, Fred, I only just saw this for the first time about 4-5 months ago and it is a new favorite. Love the spooky scenes with the ghosts and this is certainly a perfect pair for The Haunting! Great review dude

Garbage sequel, though admittedly better than the original. None of these films can get the friggin series right, but what was most annoying (besides the Mortal Kombat "Finish Him" line) was that god awful slow-mo. God this series pisses me off..
